Engineering Manager’s Questions

Technical Questions

1. How do you approach test planning for a new feature?

Great Response: "I start by thoroughly understanding the requirements and acceptance criteria. I collaborate with developers and product managers to clarify any ambiguities. Then I create a test strategy that includes different test levels - unit, integration, system, and acceptance. I identify critical user journeys and edge cases, develop test cases that cover both positive and negative scenarios, and prioritize them based on risk. I also determine what should be automated versus manual testing, and set up monitoring for key metrics post-release. Throughout this process, I maintain traceability between requirements and test cases to ensure complete coverage."

Mediocre Response: "I read the requirements document and create test cases based on the functionality described. I try to cover the main paths and some edge cases, then execute the tests manually first. If time permits, I'll automate some of the repetitive tests. I usually follow a template for test case creation that includes steps, expected results, and actual results."

Poor Response: "I wait for development to be complete, then create test cases based on how the feature works. I focus on making sure the feature does what it's supposed to do according to the acceptance criteria. If we're under time pressure, I just test the happy path to make sure the basic functionality works and move on to the next feature. Testing is often the last step before release, so I need to be efficient."

2. How do you determine what tests should be automated versus manually tested?

Great Response: "I use several criteria to determine automation candidates. Tests that run frequently (like regression tests), tests that are repetitive or data-intensive, tests that are difficult to perform manually, or tests that verify critical functionality are all good automation candidates. Manual testing is better for exploratory testing, usability testing, ad-hoc testing, and scenarios that require human judgment or change frequently. I also consider the ROI of automation - how long it will take to automate versus how often we'll run the test and how much time it saves. A balanced approach is key: automation for stability and consistency, manual testing for insight and discovery."

Mediocre Response: "I automate tests that are repetitive and part of our regression suite. Manual testing is used for new features and edge cases. I generally follow the testing pyramid, with more unit tests than UI tests. Automation helps with regression testing and saves time in the long run."

Poor Response: "I try to automate everything possible because manual testing is slow and error-prone. UI tests give the most coverage, so I focus on creating end-to-end tests that exercise the entire system. If we don't have time to automate everything, I'll do manual testing, but I prefer to spend my time building out the automation suite."

3. How do you handle flaky tests in your CI/CD pipeline?

Great Response: "Flaky tests are a significant problem because they reduce trust in our test suite and slow down development. My approach is threefold: identification, diagnosis, and resolution. First, I monitor test runs and identify patterns of flakiness using metrics and logs. Once identified, I diagnose the root cause - common issues include race conditions, environmental dependencies, or resource contention. I then fix the underlying issue rather than just rerunning the test. In some cases, I might quarantine extremely flaky tests temporarily while fixing them to avoid blocking the pipeline. 4. How do you measure and improve test coverage?

Great Response: "I view test coverage as more than just code coverage metrics. I use a multi-dimensional approach that includes code coverage (line, branch, function), requirements coverage, and risk coverage. For code coverage, I use tools like JaCoCo or Istanbul to measure how much of our code is exercised by tests. However, I don't chase arbitrary coverage targets - I focus on the critical paths and complex logic. For requirements coverage, I maintain a traceability matrix between requirements and test cases. For risk coverage, I identify high-risk areas based on complexity, business importance, and historical defects, then ensure those areas have comprehensive tests. To improve coverage, I conduct coverage gap analysis, perform testing demos with stakeholders to identify missing scenarios, and implement pair testing or mob testing sessions. I also use techniques like mutation testing to evaluate test quality beyond simple coverage metrics."

I design tests that simulate realistic user behavior, including typical workflows and data volumes. 7. What strategies do you use to find bugs that automated tests might miss?

Great Response: "Automated tests are excellent for verifying expected behavior, but they have blind spots. To find bugs they might miss, I employ several strategies: First, I conduct structured exploratory testing sessions focused on different quality attributes like usability, security, or performance. I use techniques like boundary value analysis, state transition testing, and error guessing based on my experience with similar systems. I apply negative testing and 'evil user' scenarios to try unusual inputs or sequences. I also practice 'context switching' - testing from different user perspectives or using different devices and platforms. 8. How do you test for security vulnerabilities?

For implementation-level vulnerabilities, I use static analysis tools integrated into our CI/CD pipeline to catch common issues early. Mediocre Response: "When there's pressure to deliver quickly, I try to prioritize testing efforts to focus on the most critical functionality first. I communicate the risks of cutting corners to the team and product owner. I work extra hours if needed to maintain quality standards. I also suggest ways to streamline the testing process without compromising quality, like focusing on automated regression testing."
