Technical Interviewer’s Questions

1. How do you approach test planning for a new feature?

Great Response: "I start by understanding requirements through stakeholder discussions and documentation review. Then I create a test strategy covering different testing types (unit, integration, system, acceptance) with clear scope and priorities. I identify high-risk areas using techniques like risk analysis matrices and create detailed test cases prioritized by risk. I also consider automation opportunities early, allocate resources efficiently, and establish clear pass/fail criteria. Throughout, I maintain communication with developers and product teams to ensure alignment."

Mediocre Response: "I review the requirements document, write test cases based on the specifications, and execute them once the feature is ready. I try to cover the main functionality and some edge cases. If I find bugs, I report them to developers and retest after fixes."

Poor Response: "I wait for developers to complete the feature, then test against the requirements to make sure it works as expected. I focus on testing the obvious user flows since those are what customers will use most. Once the main functionality works correctly, I sign off on the feature."

2. Describe your approach to regression testing.

Great Response: "My regression testing strategy combines automated and manual approaches. I maintain a prioritized regression suite with critical path tests automated for efficiency. Before each release, I analyze which areas might be affected by new changes using techniques like impact analysis and code coverage tools. I prioritize tests that cover core functionality, previously problematic areas, and components affected by recent changes. I also implement continuous integration to run automated regression tests on every build, allowing early detection of issues. For manual regression, I use risk-based selection to optimize time constraints."

Mediocre Response: "I keep a set of regression test cases that cover the main functionality and run them before releases. I've automated some of these tests to save time. I focus on areas that have changed and try to cover the basic flows to make sure nothing breaks."

Poor Response: "I run our standard regression test suite before each release. It's a fixed set of tests that we've been using for a while. Sometimes we don't have time to run everything, so we just test the new features and assume the rest is still working since it worked before."

3. How do you determine test coverage for a project?

Great Response: "I approach test coverage from multiple dimensions. For code coverage, I use tools to measure statement, branch, and condition coverage, aiming for industry-standard thresholds but recognizing coverage metrics alone are insufficient. I complement this with requirements-based coverage tracking to ensure all functional and non-functional requirements are tested. Additionally, I implement risk-based coverage analysis to focus extra testing on complex, critical, or frequently changing areas. I also track defect discovery rates to identify potential gaps in coverage. Regular coverage reviews with the team help us identify and address blind spots."

4. What strategies do you use to test API endpoints?

Great Response: "I implement a multi-layered approach to API testing. First, I verify the contract by validating response schemas, status codes, and headers against the API specification. I test both positive and negative scenarios, including invalid inputs, boundary values, and missing parameters. For integration aspects, I check authentication, authorization, and proper handling of concurrent requests. I also conduct performance testing to verify response times, throughput, and resource utilization under various loads. Finally, I implement automated regression tests within the CI pipeline and use contract testing to ensure compatibility between services. If the API works for the main use cases, I assume it's working properly. The developers usually handle input validation, so I don't focus too much on that."

5. How do you prioritize defects?

Great Response: "I prioritize defects using a systematic framework that considers multiple factors. First, I assess business impact—how the defect affects core functionality, revenue, or user experience. Second, I evaluate technical severity based on frequency of occurrence, reproducibility, and potential for data corruption. Third, I consider scope—how many users or components are affected. I also factor in workaround availability and complexity of fix to provide a holistic view. Using these criteria, I classify defects into categories like Critical (blocking, no workaround), High (major functionality impact), Medium (limited impact, has workaround), and Low (minor issues). I collaborate with product owners and developers during this process to ensure alignment with business priorities and technical constraints."

Mediocre Response: "I categorize bugs based on their severity and impact on users. High-priority bugs affect core functionality or have no workarounds, medium-priority bugs have workarounds but affect important features, and low-priority bugs are minor issues that don't significantly impact users. I discuss with the team to make sure we're addressing the most important issues first."

Poor Response: "I usually follow our standard bug priority template—P1 for crashes, P2 for major issues, P3 for minor problems. I rely on the product manager to adjust priorities if needed since they understand the business requirements better. We fix the P1s first, then work down the list as time permits."

6. Explain your approach to test automation strategy.

Great Response: "My automation strategy follows a pyramid approach with unit tests forming a broad base, integration tests in the middle, and UI tests at the top. I prioritize automation based on ROI—focusing on critical paths, repetitive tasks, and regression-prone areas first. 9. How do you approach testing a complex feature with many dependencies?

Great Response: "For complex features with multiple dependencies, I use a systematic approach starting with dependency mapping—creating a visual representation of all components and their interactions. I then implement incremental testing, beginning with isolated component testing using mocks or stubs to simulate dependencies not yet available. As components become available, I progress to integration testing focused on interface contracts and interaction patterns. I prioritize critical paths and high-risk areas through risk analysis. To manage complexity, I use state transition diagrams to identify test scenarios covering various system states. Throughout this process, I maintain close collaboration with developers and architects to understand design decisions and constraints. 10. Describe how you would test a database migration.

Great Response: "Database migration testing requires a comprehensive approach to ensure data integrity and system functionality. I start with pre-migration validation—creating checksums and record counts for critical tables to verify after migration. I design test cases covering both data verification (accuracy, completeness, consistency) and functional testing (application behavior with migrated data). I implement automated comparison tools to efficiently validate large datasets between source and target databases. If possible, I'd test the migration process itself to ensure it completes within the expected timeframe."

Poor Response: "I'd make sure we have a backup of the original database, then test that the application works with the new database after migration. I focus on checking that the main functions of the application still work correctly. The database team usually handles the details of the migration process, so I mainly test from the application side."

11. How do you approach accessibility testing?

Great Response: "My accessibility testing strategy addresses both technical compliance and real user experience. I test against established standards like WCAG 2.1 at the appropriate conformance level (A, AA, or AAA) using a combination of automated and manual techniques.
